Dave Dahl, founder of Dave's Killer Bread, is the epitome of a holistic person. In fact, he should consider going into motivational speaking on the self-help circuit; he'd probably make some killer dough. While many of us less gutsy types would sweep our jaded pasts under the carpet, Dave embraces his whole past and present self--the good, the bad and the downright thug-like. Those of us who have tried some Dave's Killer Bread have probably read the story on the back of the loaf.
It's the condensed version of an inspirational tale about an ex-con and drug addict who turns his life around and becomes the creator of some really awesome bread. It's kind of a teaser, definitely leaving you wanting to know more about this former punk. With just a few clicks, you can be learning more on the Dave's Killer Bread website. For instance, you'll discover that Dave's father, a pioneer in the healthy bread industry, was the creator of Nature Bake. When Dave was a kid, he wanted to be like his dad; however, by the time he was a teenager he no longer had that dream. Eventually, Dave became a drug addict and began committing felonies that landed him a total of 15 years in jail. So just how did Dave become the success story that he is today? You'll have to find out by watching a short film, "The Dave's Killer Bread Story," on his website. So what is it about Dave's breads that makes them so addicting? Is there crack sprinkled into the wheat gluten? No, it's just the perfect blend of nutritious, organic ingredients that goes into each of Dave's high protein, high fiber products. And, as if that isn't good enough, his products are made without the use of animal products!
If you are fortunate enough to live within driving distance of Milwaukie, Ore., make a journey out to The Healthy Bread Store bakery outlet, aka "Breadquarters." Surrounded by an abundance of fresh, day-old, and frozen store returns, you'll think you have died and gone to bread heaven. There are deals in there that will make you want to start dancing to the Jailhouse Rock, like a loaf of Rockin' Rye for $2.60 or a Peace Bomb for $1.80. And if you are a Nature Bake nut, you can get many of those tasty breads, too. But it's not just about bread. Have you tried a Sin Dawg lately? They're delectably healthy, whole grain cinnamon rolls that taste so good they ought to be illegal. There's always some new product on the horizon, such as the recently unveiled Sprookies. These sprouted whole-grain cookies are currently available at Portland and Beaverton Farmer's Markets as well as at Breadquarters.
Dave is making a difference in this world. Just visit the Dave's Killer Bread Facebook page and read the posts from his over 5,000 bread fans. It would have been a real crime if he hadnít been able to turn his life around. But he did, and he is an inspiration to us all because he found the strength to do it. And the world is a tastier, healthier place because of it.
