Dr. John McDougall
Presentation Title: TBA
Limited Seating Available on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Physician and nutrition expert who teaches better health through vegetarian cuisine. John A. McDougall, MD. has been studying, writing and "speaking out" about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 30 years.
Dr. McDougall believes that people should look, feel great and enjoy optimal health for a lifetime. Unfortunately, many people compromise their health unknowingly through poor dietary habits.
As with many leaders of public opinion, he often finds it necessary to challenge the accepted wisdom of the time, and was one of the first traditional physicians of the medical "establishment" to assert that adoption of a vegetarian diet can reverse unfavorable medical conditions such as heart disease. Medical research is now confirming this assertion. And slowly but surely, medical practitioners are accepting it.
Dr. McDougall is the author of several national bestsellers including: The Starch Solution: The McDougall Plan: 12 Days to Dynamic Health, McDougall's Medicine: A Challenging Second Opinion, The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss, The New McDougall Cookbook, The McDougall Program for Women, and his latest ground breaking book, The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart.

Scott West, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Director of Intelligence and Investigations
Presentation Title: TBA
Scott West retired from federal law enforcement in 2008 and began working with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He had been a supporter of the organization for over 20 years, so his position as Director of Intelligence and Investigations was a natural transition. Scott has been to some amazing and some pretty horrible places around the world investigating marine wildlife destruction and working to end such practices. His work has taken him both undercover and into the middle of the Japanese tsunami. No two days are the same.
Elora Malama West is a homeschooled teenage activist. She is on the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) Board of Advisors for Children’s Education and Activities. She is currently 19 and attending community college with plans to soon transfer to pursue a BA in Environmental Studies and a minor in Multimedia/Journalism.
In the fall of 2010 at age 16, Elora accompanied her father, Scott West, to Taiji, Japan for the first SSCS Cove Guardian campaign. They spent three months on the ground reporting everyday about the plight of the dolphins. While there Elora began a blog, A Teenage Activist: This Girl's Soapbox and encouraged thousands of people to call the Japanese embassies in their area to protest the dolphin slaughter. Her young age combined with her blog reports brought international attention to what is happening in Taiji, Japan.
Elora participated in the first ever meeting between the mayor of Taiji and the SSCS activists opposing the town's annual slaughter. She hopes to send a message to her generation that you are never too young to make your voice heard. Elora wants to inspire kids to stand against cetacean captivity, protest swim with dolphin programs, and other institutions that exploit marine mammals. She believes that if you love dolphins and whales, you want to work to protect them.
Elora also spent time in Australia aboard the Steve Irwin. She worked with SSCS Australia in preparation for Operation Zero Tolerance, the 2012-2013 campaign against Japanese whaling in Antarctic waters. In April 2013, she joined SSCS US at the Columbia River for the Dam Guardian campaign in an effort to end the slaughter of sea lions in Washington and Oregon. Follow her blog and keep up with her story.
Scott and his daughter Elora Malama (crew member and Board of Advisors) will discuss their campaign activities, and share stories about their global travels in defense of our world’s oceans during their weekend seminars. From the southern ocean to the shores of Taiji, Japan, Scott and Elora have participated in numerous campaigns. Come hear about their efforts, learn how you can be involved in participating, and what you can do to support the efforts of the organization to save the world’s oceans.
