Portland Potluck

  • West Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship 8470 Southwest Oleson Road Portland, OR, 97223 United States (map)

Join us for food and friends at our monthly Portland potluck, and then stay after to hear DEQ Environmental Specialist and Northwest VEG Co-President Peter Spendelow talk about Plastics and the Environment. This is a hot topic, with bills now before the Oregon Legislature proposing to ban plastic straws from restaurants or to ban plastic check-out bags at stores. We’ll be talking about:

  • Plastics in marine debris

  • How much plastic in the Pacific Gyre is from fishing nets (lots)

  • Compostable plastic, and why we don’t use it at the Portland VegFest

  • What plastics can be recycled, and what can’t.

We’ll end with a Q&A session, so bring any questions you have about plastics. Join us at 5 pm for the potluck, 6:30 pm for the talk, or both.

Peter Spendelow has been an environmental specialist for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for 33 years, and President or Co-President of Northwest VEG for 12 years. Recent work at DEQ has included an assessment for improving plastics recycling in Oregon, and an evaluation of the environmental benefits of recycling different types of material.
