Walk the Wok
By Susan Hanson
For many years, Sky King’s favorite restaurant was Loving Hut at 1239 SW Jefferson Street. During COVID, Loving Hut only offered takeout, and then closed its doors. Sky was devastated to lose the food he loved best. Golden Beauty was his favorite dish, and just thinking he might never eat it again would keep him up at night. After Sky made many calls to the owner, Ping, begging him to reconsider his decision to sell, Ping asked Sky if he would like to buy the restaurant. Although Sky’s only restaurant experience was being a waiter, he still jumped at the chance to save his favorite dining spot. A friend helped with the finances and became the owner, and Sky is the acting manager. Another friend, David, is the main cook. Ping agreed to come in and show Sky and David the magic in creating his special recipes including how to cut each vegetable and how to use a wok.
Many of the former customers of Loving Hut are now discovering Walk the Wok where they can have the same great food they used to enjoy. Everything at the restaurant is vegan and based on Chinese and Taiwanese wok dishes. The menu includes stir fries, soups, golden rolls, nuggets, and more. Most of the meals have soy-based protein that comes from a Taiwanese company called BeLeaf that is GMO-free and promotes veganism and peace. Sky and David slice and dice pieces of soy-based “ham,” “beef,” “shrimp,” and “chicken,” and transform them into “meat” for the stir fries and other dishes. Sky hopes to get another meat alternative for those people who are gluten- or soy-free.
The sauces and wontons are all made in-house, and the sauces are the key to why everything is so delicious. Fan favorite dishes include Sweet & Sour Divine and General Tso’s Divine. Check out these photos from Instagram.
And be sure to say hi to Sky and David when you go. Sky King is the one with the big blond dregs, and they both love meeting the customers!
